101. (D) Bond polarity is quantified by the electronegativity difference between atoms. The most polar bond will contain the two atoms with the greatest difference in electronegativities, fluorine and iodine (provided it is a covalent bond; ionic bonds form between atoms whose electronegativity difference is very large). It is important to remember that the polarity of bonds falls along a continuum. There is no abrupt switch between ionic and covalent bond formation at a particular value of electronegativity difference, rather, bonds can be described as having a particular percent of ionic character (see the following table).
